First Grade! Why do you teach first grade? They are so little… They need so much attention… They can’t tie their own shoes or blow their noses or, or, or… First grade is my life and I love it! I have taught first grade for 11 years now. I have taught it so long that sometimes I even talk or write like a first grader. I love seeing a students reactions when they learn something new! I hear from students “I can’t read” and then when we begin reading in our books they say, “Oh, I can read!” It is amazing to see a child discover new things.
A native of Albuquerque, I attended Albuquerque TVI (now CNM) and received my Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. I then moved on to UNM and finished up at New Mexico Highlands University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. I also have an endorsement of TESOL. I received my colloquy through Concordia’s online system (CUEnet). I went on to receive my master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an endorsement in early childhood education and an endorsement in reading from Concordia Portland online. Throughout my teaching career, I have spent 15 years in elementary education and 3 years in a preschool classroom. I have taught third grade, kindergarten and my favorite, first grade. I have taught at APS and here at Christ Lutheran where I have attended church my entire life.
I have been married to Keith going on 20 years.
